East Bay Municipal Utility District employee saves a life!
Meter Reader Johnathan Kaufman recenetly completed a CPR class at the District, but never thought he'd use it so soon. He and his wife, celebrating their fourth anniversary in Hawaii, noticed other restaurant patrons staring in their direction. Johnathan looked back and saw an elderly lady (Ruthie, they learned later) and her daughter. Ruthies's body looked very stiff and when the daughter pushed at her, she did not respond. Johnathan says he had to do something. He rushed over, felt for a pulse with no result, then laid her on the floor to start CPR. Johnathan says, "I knew I needed to provide oxygen for her heart. I remembered everything I learned and started doing it." Ruthie didn't respond at first, but within a few minutes became alert. When the amulance arrived, the Emergency Medical Technician told Johnathan if not for his quick resonse, Ruthie would not have survived. Johnathan says, "I dont' feel special. It just feels good to help someone."
