In a University of North Carolina study, researchers identified 104 patients who had a final diagnosis of stroke who were transported by ambulance. The researchers reviewed the 911 tapes and found that out of the 104 calls:

  • 40% reported Altered mental status
  • 32% reported trouble walking
  • 27 % reported impaired speach
  • 27% reported abnormal breathing

Operators (911) dispatched an ambulance as high priority 79% of the time.
